These are two year old Japanese lace leaf maples we grew from seed. Acer Palmatum var. Dissectum. Commonly, these are not grown from seed then sold, but rather grated onto standard Japanese maples which are stronger on their own roots. However, us bonsai people don’t wanted grafted trees. They just grow much slower from seed, as you can see, as these are two years old. 

The seed is really quite expensive and not easy to get. It also doesn’t germinate as well as standard Jmaple. with these you’re buying time, 2 years of growing on their own roots. 

At this stage it’s a really good time to wire them as the trunks are still pliable. They love the cold too but please protect the until spring time and after the weather stabilizes in the spring.
